2002 Carignan Grapes
Carignan is a red grape variety widely planted in Languedoc Roussillon
and Provence. Carignan is sometimes bottled as a varietal, but is most
often valued for the deep colour and structure it can bring to a blend. It
can produce dense, structured wines of high quality if yields are kept low, but
too often it is over-cropped.
The Carignan vines at Domaine Sainte Rose are estimated to be between 30 and
35 years old. All the Carignan vines at the Domaine were
green harvested during July 2002 in order to produce low yields of
concentrated, full-flavoured fruit. The Carignan was harvested on the 8th
of October when the grapes registered 14.3
Baumé and had an
acidity content of
3.0 grams/litre H2S04.
The Carignan was
macerated for 3 weeks in order to
extract flavour and colour.
Domaine Sainte Rose produced a single Carignan based wine from the 2002
vintage:
La Garrigue-
A special blend of
Syrah,
Grenache and Carignan
