2009 Marsanne Grapes

The Marsanne grapes were picked on the 24th of August.  This is the first crop to be taken from the Marsanne vines, which were planted in March 2007.  Care was taken not to leave the berries too long on the vine as this variety can become flabby if allowed to over-ripen.

Marsanne is a variety grown widely in the Languedoc/Northern Rhone valley and therefore thrives in a warm, dry climate.  The harvest was conducted at night to ensure that the grapes were picked at a cool temperature thus ensuring that the fermentation did not begin while processing the fruit.  As is typical of Marsanne the berries were darker in colour than some white varieties and very concentrated in flavour.

Having chilled the must and racked the juice, the Marsanne was then transferred to oak barrels where fermentation was instigated by adding yeast.  The barrels are stored a temperature controlled environment to ensure optimum control.  The Marsanne will be oak-aged for between 7-10 months.

The Marsanne will be used to blend with our Roussanne and make its way into our future Vent Du Nord and Pinacle Blanc.
